There is no doubt that the new commissioner of police in Imo state, Danjuma Aboki, has shown prospects of finesse and professionalism since assumption of office in the state. Since his arrival about three weeks ago, the security chief has not left anyone in doubt that his philosophy and viewpoint about how to adequately police the state are in tandem with the international best practices.

After the just concluded governorship election in Imo state, Aboki has embarked on visits to the divisions and units and commands under his supervision. This on going visits are meant to boost the moral of his men in the state in the face of the insecurity ravaging the state.

The new CP’s approach can’t be less appreciated coming of a time the confidence of cops in the state are not at maximum level having faced several attacks from non state actors for over three years now.

The CP also has shown that he intends to adopt the much applauded community policing strategy in policing the state. This community policing strategy will have the new CP operate an open door police which will make him have convivial and communal relationship with the people and residents of the state. Honestly, there is no better mechanism in policing a state like Imo than this.

The actions the CP had taken also paints him as a man who loves justice and abhors abuse of fundamental human rights. In this regards, the CP will get the maximum support of the people of the state in making Imo a safer state that would have investors prioritize the state as a destination hub.

When the news filtered in that CP Aboki has ordered the immediate removal of the officer in charge of the Orji Divisional station in Owerri North Local Government Area, CPS Udom Godswin over the escape of a rape suspect who escaped from the division, many people hailed the CP and described him as an uncompromising CP who would not spare any  corrupt officer in his command.

A statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, communicating the CP’s decision in the escape of the suspect read “The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma has ordered the immediate redeployment of Orji Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Udom Godwin to the Command headquarters, Owerri on standby over an allegation of Conspiracy, Aiding and Abetting in the escape of one Ihee Andrew, ‘m’ of Ahiazu Mbaise, a suspected 30-yrs-old serial rapist detained at the Division.

“In addition, CSP Udom Godwin and other officers serving in the division that are linked to the case have been issued an official query for serious dereliction of duty, discreditable conduct, lack of supervision, failure to send situation report, disobedience to lawful order and an act of sabotage and unbecoming of a public officer respectively.

The CP has mandated the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (DCSCIID) to carry out a comprehensive investigation and make sure that the suspects involved in the alleged case of raping a 20yrs-old lady in Orji are all arrested made to face the full wrath of the law. More so, The DPO and other officers involved in the case have been subjected to investigation and will be sanctioned appropriately if found complicit.

“Meanwhile, CSP Seedy Eke Chima who is a seasoned police officer has been deployed to take charge as the DPO Orji

“The Command appreciates the concerns of the general public and assures them that the victim will get the justice that she deserves in this case. We say no to rape, sexual abuse and other gender related crime. Further development on this case will be communicated to members of the public.”

The CP’s action as a no -nonsense officer in this regards should be commended. No proactive commissioner of police should tolerate this in his command. But in ensuring that the right thing is done in this regards, it is important that no innocent man is victimized.

From the records available, the DPO, CSP Udom Godwin was not at the station on Friday, November 24, when the suspect escaped from the police station. CSP Udom Godswin  was at the CP’s conference for senior officers at the command headquarters in Owerri when the suspect who was allegedly released from the cell by the Station officer, Abba Sunday to a constable,Dominic Uzoukwu scaled the compound fence and escaped.

Immediately CSP Udom Godswin was informed about the escape of the suspect, he immediately alerted youths in the area to be on the look out for the fleeing suspect. He didn’t stop at that. He immediately declared the suspect wanted and activated tactical units of the division and charged them to immediately rearrest the on the run suspect. CSP Udom Godswin was not at the division when he escaped . He was not at any drinking pulp. He was on an official duty at the command headquarters under the supervision of the CP. CSP Udom Godswin didn’t order the station administration officer to release the suspect from the cell before he escaped.

The rape case was incidented on November 19 and CPS Udom Godswin effected  arrest on November 20. The fleeing suspect, Andrew alongside one Ledaf Chisom, 35,. We’re arrested

CSP Udom Godswin also invited the hotel management where the alleged rape incident took place and they said the victim came with the suspects and left with them.

The fleeing suspect is from Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo state. His family is traceable. From the available records his parents are alive. They should be invited and asked if they in anywhere compromised CSP Udom Godswin. An innocent man should not be victimized.

Why the suspect was unable to graduate from the philosophy department from the Nnamdi Azikiwe university, Awka should also be investigated. The feeling suspect when caught should be quired if himself or any of his relatives or friends compromised CSP Udom Godswin.

Imo are determined to seeing how this development will fully evolve. No innocent person in this matter should be victimized. Let holistic and dispassionate investigation be carried out in this alleged rape incident. Why we hope that no culprit should escape the full wrath of the law, anybody who is innocent should not be victimized either.
