Ace broadcaster, Theodore Uba but popularly known as Nonso Nkwa has promised to work for the straightening of the laws on human rights protection if elected as a member of the house of representatives later this month.

Uba, who made the promise in his presentation at a town hall meeting organised by the Owerri Catholic Archdiocese for political office seekers in the state, argued that the laws on human rights protection in the country were weak.

The broadcaster who is the candidate of the African Democratic Congress for Mbaitoli/ Ikeduru federal constituency said part of his plans was to amend the act and give more powers to the National Human Rights Commission to prosecute human rights violators.

He said ” one of the first things I will do in the house of representatives if I am elected is to straighten our laws on human rights protection. I will ensure that the National Human rights commission is straightened so that every violator of human rights, be you police, army, DSS, Civil Defence officers are prosecuted without fear or favour.”

He argued that as an activist he would ensure that no son or daughter of his federal constituency suffers any act of violation by anybody in any part of the world.

“As for my people of Mbaike, I will do two things for you. I will establish two committees. Committee on human rights protection and Mbaike Social Contract committee. The committee on human rights protection will ensure that no son or daughter of the federal constituency is held unjustly anywhere in the world.

“We will provide legal assistance and I will fight for the person’s release. The other committee is for the handling of contracts and other works in Mbaike. I will not hijack the project or bring any contractor. The committee will determine how the work will be done and who does it. In all, the contractor must be a son or daughter of Mbaike.”
