Limited cash has hit banks in Owerri, the Imo state capital.

Our correspondent observed on Wednesday that most banks in the city limited the highest amount of cash they could give per customer in a day to N50,000.

On inquiry, our correspondent observed that the banks in the metropolis were grasping with lack of enough cash.

A banker who doesn’t want to be mentioned said ” we are managing the cash we have. We don’t have enough cash within our disposal. We are just managing it like that. We have an instruction not to give more than N50,000 per customer in a day for now. Hopefully things will improve as we get cash.”

He said that the Central Bank of Nigeria had drastically limited the amount of cash it gives to banks.

Our correspondent also observed that points of Automated Teller Machines were not dispensing enough cash to customers.

A visibly distrust customer told our correspondent that he had visited three different banks on Wednesday in Owerri only to be given N50,000 at his third attempt.

” I have been to Fidelity, Access and Guaranty Trust Banks and only got paid at the third bank. I am a POS person. What will N50,000 do for me in a day?.

“The worst is that they didn’t tell us the reason for the scarcity of cash. This country is funny. Why do they derive joy in seeing the people cry and suffer?. Why must it be now that the Christmas period season is on hand?.
